Modafinil is a eugeroic (a wakefulness promoting agent) used mainly for the treatment of sleep related disorders like narcolepsy, circadian rhythm sleep disorders and obstructive sleep apnea etc. Its off-label effectiveness has been proved in the form of a cognition-enhancing agent as well.

Alternatively, it is also used by astronauts and crew aboard the International Space Station to optimize the crew’s performance in case of fatigue.
Modafinil side effects – Is it addictive?
Although extremely rare, cases of Modafinil abuse have been reported. However the drug has a very low dependency rate on average. It has been shown to have some elevating properties but not of a high degree at the doses used therapeutically in humans.
Adverse Effects of Modafinil in Relation with Dosage:
In terms of dosage related side-effects, Modafinil is relatively harmless. Tests run with dosages of 200 mg/day, 300 mg/ day and 400mg/day were shown to have conjured only forms of anxiety and headaches, as well as nausea in some of the test subjects.
As of 2004, the FDA is aware of any Modafinil over dosage related deaths. Even if a dosage of up to 4500 mg is administered, albeit uncomfortable, it is not necessarily life threatening. In such cases, symptoms such as palpitations, tremors, aggression, nausea and diarrhea etc are often observed.
