Modafinil is a eugeroic (a wakefulness promoting agent) used mainly for the treatment of sleep related disorders like narcolepsy, circadian rhythm sleep disorders and obstructive sleep apnea etc. Its off-label effectiveness has been proved in the form of a cognition-enhancing agent as well.

This drug is usually sold under the name of Provigil, Alertec or Modavigil.

Some of the more common Modafinil side effects are:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Rashes on the body
  • Bronchospams
  • Persistent sleepiness
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Confusion and
  • Insomnia

Among these previously mentioned symptoms, there are some more serious Modafinil side effects such as:

  • Psychiatric symptoms including delusions, hallucinations, aggression, paranoia etc. Hence caution should be exercised when administering this drug to patience with a history of prior mental illnesses considering it can cause a serious relapse.
  • Multi-organ Hypersensitivity is one of the more serious modafinil side effects which can in some cases be life threatening.

Over dosage:

As of 2004, the FDA is aware of any Modafinil over dosage related deaths. Even if a dosage of up to 4500 mg is administered, albeit uncomfortable, it is not necessarily life threatening. In such cases, symptoms such as palpitations, tremors, aggression, nausea and diarrhea etc are often observed.

Other general Modafinil side effects encompass:

  • Cardiovascular Events
  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Anaphylaxis Reactions
  • Consistent Sleep and Lethargy
  • Compromised mobility and driving abilities.
