Modafinil is a eugeroic (a wakefulness promoting agent) used mainly for the treatment of sleep related disorders like narcolepsy, circadian rhythm sleep disorders and obstructive sleep apnea etc. Its off-label effectiveness has been proved in the form of a cognition-enhancing agent as well.

This drug is usually sold under the name of Provigil, Alertec or Modavigil.

Some of the more common Modafinil side effects are:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Rashes on the body
  • Bronchospams
  • Persistent sleepiness
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Confusion and
  • Insomnia

Among these previously mentioned symptoms, there are some more serious Modafinil side effects such as:

  • Psychiatric symptoms including delusions, hallucinations, aggression, paranoia etc. Hence caution should be exercised when administering this drug to patience with a history of prior mental illnesses considering it can cause a serious relapse.
  • Multi-organ Hypersensitivity is one of the more serious modafinil side effects which can in some cases be life threatening.
  • Chest pains and Palpitations (irregular heart beats). These can range in discomfort from hardly noticeable to severe. Naturally in case of the former, it is advised to speak to your doctor.
  • Anorexia
  • Back pains
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS)
  • DRESS syndrome
  • EM (Erythema multiforme)

Although the last three side effects are on the rarer end of the spectrum, they’ve been recorded in users.

Modafinil is one of the few drugs even military organization have shown interest in as it can serve as an alternative to other wakefulness promoting agents, helping soldiers stay alert in lengthy missions.

Alternatively, it is also used by astronauts and crew aboard the International Space Station to optimize the crew’s performance in case of fatigue.

Modafinil side effects – Is it addictive?

Although extremely rare, cases of Modafinil abuse have been reported. However the drug has a very low dependency rate on average. It has been shown to have some elevating properties but not of a high degree at the doses used therapeutically in humans.
Adverse Effects of Modafinil in Relation with Dosage:

In terms of dosage related side-effects, Modafinil is relatively harmless. Tests run with dosages of 200 mg/day, 300 mg/ day and 400mg/day were shown to have conjured only forms of anxiety and headaches, as well as nausea in some of the test subjects.

Over dosage:

As of 2004, the FDA is aware of any Modafinil over dosage related deaths. Even if a dosage of up to 4500 mg is administered, albeit uncomfortable, it is not necessarily life threatening. In such cases, symptoms such as palpitations, tremors, aggression, nausea and diarrhea etc are often observed.

Other general Modafinil side effects encompass:

  • Cardiovascular Events
  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Anaphylaxis Reactions
  • Consistent Sleep and Lethargy
  • Compromised mobility and driving abilities.

Although not a complete list of the side effects of Modafinil, this list covers a decent aspect of them. Modafinil is best used as a prescription-only drug but in some countries such as Mexico, can be bought over the counter as well.
